Start or elevate your building business and become a qualified builder. This hands-on course is designed to build on (pun intended) your skills and experience as a tradesperson. It is ideal if your gunning to be a residential builder and looking to get your Builders – Low Rise licence. Or, follow the pathway to site management. Use this qualification as your next step towards getting off the tools and into management of large scale projects.

In this course you will learn how to plan building construction work, apply structural principles, supervise on-site construction and learn the fundamentals of estimating and monitoring costs. This course covers the necessary skills, knowledge and experience needed to confidently take the next step in your career (and business).

What you’ll learn

This Building and Construction course gives you the skills, knowledge and experience to be competent and feel confident onsite. It is aimed at anyone looking to work on low-rise building projects as a skilled tradesperson, supervisor or builder.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Your experience adds up and you can use this to fast-track your qualification.  If you’ve got a tonne of industry experience this can be used to gain part or all of your qual.

Onsite Training

We like to think this is a bit of a game changer! Learn onsite, while you work. This means less time off the tools and more time focused on practical skills.

Sometimes we like to do it old-school! If you’re better on the tools than on a computer – we’ve got your back. At FTA, we’re determined to ensure you learn how you learn best.

To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate competency in 13 core units and 3 elective units. Please refer below for the core units of competency and a sample of suggested electives:

  • CPCCBC4008B    Conduct on-site supervision of building and construction projects
  • CPCCBC4009B    Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects
  • CPCCBC4010B    Apply structural principles to residential low rise constructions
  • CPCCBC4011B    Apply structural principles to commercial low rise constructions

Licencing

This qualification meets one of the requirements for you to obtain a licence with your states regulatory body. Please consult with your local authority to ensure you are eligible and meet other criteria prior to commencing studies with us.

 Scope of Work

  • Building work on a class 1 or class 10 building
  • Building work on classes 2 to 9 buildings with a gross floor area not more than 2000m², but not including Type A or Type B construction
  • Building work that consists of non-structural work on a building, regardless of—
  • the class of the building; or
  • the gross floor area of the building
  • Prepare plans and specifications if the plans and specifications are:
  • for the licensee’s personal use, or
  • for use in building work to be performed by the licensee personally.

Qualifications Required

Any one of the following:

  1. Successful completion of CPC40110 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building);
  2. Successful completion of a course the authority considers is at least equivalent to the course mentioned above;
  3. A recognition certificate as a builder qualified to carry out the scope of work for the licence class;
  4. A qualification or statement of attainment of required competency for the class of licence.

Course Duration

The course duration will vary depending on your experience, skills and chosen study mode. As a guide:

  • Standard duration is between 12-24 months
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): 3-6 months- this term may be extended by Funding Criteria, amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required  – eligibility criteria apply
  • CSQ
    • Program completion date is 30 September 2021 (for the Higher Level Skills General Program 2019/20 Contract)
    • Program completion date is 30 September 2020 (for the Apprentice Advance+ Higher Level Skills Program 2019/20 Contract)
  • Fee for Service: 3-12 months subject to the amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required

Assessment

Your skills will be assessed through a mix of practical and theory tasks. Which is essentially showing us what you’ve learnt and how you do it.

Theory may be assessed Online or via Workbook. Practical Assessment will be conducted at your place of work or work site with fit for purpose facilities and equipment which are to be made available to your FTA trainer & Assessor for training and assessment purposes.
